It’s called Late Innings, by Roger Angell, one of the best baseball writers of the last 40 years or so. The book, published in 1982, appealed to me because it’s about the 1977-1981 seasons, the time [...] It’s Columbus Day weekend. Here on the east coast, it means a day off in honor of Christopher Columbus. He’s not quite as popular as he used to be, but he still gets a holiday here. When I lived in the Midwest, Columbus Day wasn’t a holiday. At least not in Wisconsin. There aren’t too many Italians [...] I saw this video over on barstoolsports.com and had instant flashbacks to one of the Planet of the Apes movies. In one of the sequels, we see that humans kept apes as pets. Eventually, there was a really smart ape named Caesar, and he led the revolt that culminated in the apes taking over. For those of you not young enough to remember 1985 (or who may have forgotten), there was nothing hotter than mixing gymnastics (in particular, pommel horse techniques), with martial arts.
